Benefits of the Boom

100 Frogs was my first serious foray into filmmaking so there obviously was a lot of things I did not know. As well as a lot of things that one may know in theory but it doesn’t really connect until you apply it. Boom microphones were that thing for me.

One of the episodes we shot had extreme sound issues and I was dreading having to try and fix and do patch work to the sound. Then I remembered we used a boom mic that day! I decided to try and see how I could work with it. This was the only day of our 12 day shooting schedule where we used a boom mic. Mostly because of money issues.

I was able to match/sync audio perfectly and completely tune out the horrible noise from the air-conditioner. The boom mic just zeroed in on the actors vocals and canceled everything else out. A boom mic is absolutely necessary, especially in the event you lose the main source of your audio.

I always saw that people used boom mics on film sets but thought it was just something extra. (This industry can seem so excessive to a beginning filmmaker) Being a monetarily-challenged I made an effort to cut down to the absolute bare necessities. I figured since we already had a pretty good shot gun mic attached to the camera anything else was just luxury. Not even. During the editing process I’m noticed that the boom mic is giving me the cleanest audio out the lot. I knew I had to use one on every film set from then on. Sound is the one thing one mustn't skimp on.

Boom mics are like a miracle and it single handedly saved one of my webisodes!!!
